You own a Garmin watch, ride with Strava friends, and do yoga through Apple Fitness+. Three platforms, three data silos, zero interoperability out of the box.

This guide fixes that. In about 15 minutes, you'll have every workout auto-syncing across all three platforms -- so your Garmin trail run lands on Strava with full power data, and your Apple Fitness+ strength session feeds Garmin's Training Status algorithm.

What Each Platform Does Best

Strava is a social network for athletes. Segments, leaderboards, kudos, clubs, and route discovery make training visible and competitive. Analytics are adequate but not deep.

Garmin Connect is a data engine. It synthesizes GPS, HR, power, cadence, VO2 max, and recovery into the most sophisticated Training Status system available to consumers. Nobody browses Garmin for fun, though.

Apple Fitness+ delivers the best guided workout library -- 4,000+ instructor-led classes across 12 categories with real-time Apple Watch metrics on screen. Zero post-workout analytics.

How Data Flows Between Platforms

The sync relationships are not symmetrical. Data flows in specific directions, and understanding this is critical.

The Golden Rule: Record on Garmin, Distribute Everywhere

Always record outdoor activities on your Garmin device. It captures the richest sensor data and auto-syncs to both Strava and Apple Health. Recording on your phone and pushing data backward into Garmin degrades Training Status calculations.

Connecting Garmin to Strava

This is the most important sync. Once set up, every Garmin activity auto-appears on Strava with full GPS, HR, power, and lap data.

  1. Garmin Connect β†’ Settings β†’ Third-Party Apps β†’ Strava
  2. Authorize via Strava's OAuth page
  3. Enable Auto Upload (the critical setting)
  4. Verify with a short test activity -- it should appear on Strava within 5 minutes

Backfilling Historical Data

The sync only works forward. Export historical activities as .fit files from connect.garmin.com and bulk-upload at strava.com/upload/select (25 files per batch).

Connecting Garmin to Apple Health

This pushes Garmin data into Apple's ecosystem and pulls Apple Fitness+ workouts back into Garmin so Training Status sees all your training.

  1. Garmin Connect app β†’ Settings β†’ Health & Wellness β†’ Apple Health β†’ toggle ON
  2. Grant all HealthKit permissions (Active Energy, HR, Workouts, Steps, Sleep, VO2 Max)
  3. Enable "Import from Apple Health" β†’ toggle ON Workouts (this is the setting most people miss)
  4. Verify with a 10-minute Fitness+ workout -- it should appear in Garmin within 15 minutes

Duplicate Activity Prevention

Both Garmin and Apple Health auto-detect overlapping activities by timestamp. Wearing both watches simultaneously works without issues in practice.

Connecting Apple Fitness+ to Strava

There's no direct integration. The path is: Fitness+ β†’ Apple Health β†’ Strava.

  1. Strava app β†’ Settings β†’ Applications, Services & Devices β†’ Health
  2. Grant HealthKit access for Workouts, HR, and Active Energy
  3. Enable "Sync Activities from Apple Health"

Indoor Workouts Have No GPS

Apple Fitness+ workouts are mostly indoor. They'll appear on Strava as indoor activities -- visible in your log and weekly totals, but without a map. This is expected behavior.

The pattern: outdoor endurance on Garmin, indoor guided sessions on Fitness+, everything flows to Strava for the social layer. Garmin's Training Status sees all seven workouts.

Third-Party Gap Fillers

Native integrations cover 90% of needs. For the rest:

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but both platforms offer privacy zones. On Strava, set a radius (up to 1 mile) around sensitive locations via Settings β†’ Privacy β†’ Hide Start/End Points.

Yes, but with limitations. Imported workouts contribute cardiovascular load, but Garmin can't calculate Training Effect without its own sensor data. Record at least 2 outdoor GPS runs per week on Garmin for optimal accuracy.

Disable Strava's Apple Health sync for activity types you record on Garmin (Running, Cycling). Keep Yoga, HIIT, and Strength enabled so Fitness+ sessions still flow through.

Partially. Garmin-to-Strava works identically (server-side sync). Apple Fitness+ is iOS-only. Android users can substitute Google Fit or Samsung Health with FitnessSyncer or SyncMyTracks.

No. Strava's free tier handles all incoming activity sync from Garmin and Apple Health. Summit ($11.99/mo) adds analytics features but doesn't affect sync.
